Brian Griffin

Famed for his eclecticism and unpredictability, the photographer and filmmaker’s online gallery called for order from chaos.

We created the Brian Griffin website to bring together and display his works – which span almost 50 years – along with a printed catalogue of photography for auction. We needed to achieve a sense of timelessness and simplicity, to balance the variety of art within. The design – bold and monochromatic – allows the viewer to pore over the work with ease.

Snapshot
He’s photographed everyone from Margaret Thatcher to Depeche Mode, his clients include British Airways and The Sunday Times Magazine, and he’s produced major commissions for Reykjavik Energy and the state opening of St Pancras Station. Brian’s work is held in collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.

Considered “Photographer of the Decade” by The Guardian in 1989; “the most unpredictable and influential British portrait photographer of the last decades” by the British Journal of Photography in 2005; and “one of Britain’s most influential photographers” by the World Photography Organisation in 2015, Brian Griffin has been a freelance photographer, filmmaker and music video director since 1972.

How a coffee became a website
A chance meeting with our Creative Director, Stephen was how the website began. Working in the same vicinity as Brian, Stephen collected a limited edition print from his studio. The pair sat with a coffee and soon realised they shared an understanding, and many of the same influences. Before long, they were brewing plans to collaborate.

Feedback

“I first met Stephen for a coffee – so he could pick-up his recently purchased limited edition print of Depeche Mode’s, A Broken Frame album, in Hoxton, London. After a few minutes of us talking we just clicked, he got me – and my pictures and we shared many stories of the design and photography industries. Two hours later, we’d agreed that my website clearly needed a serious makeover, and that’s exactly what he did.

“It showcases my work perfectly, an online gallery.”
