Pearson Longman

As publisher and former owner of Penguin Books, Pearson Longman will testify, book cover design can make or break a book.

We know, you shouldn’t judge a book… But the truth is, without a beautifully designed cover, it’s harder than ever to sell traditional books. We’ve now lost count as to how many covers, sleeves and jackets we’ve designed for Longman – but we know we’ve taken great satisfaction in every one of them.

Longman, the world's oldest commercial imprint, was originally founded in London by Thomas Longman back in 1724; in 1968, Longman was acquired by the global publisher Pearson, owner of Penguin and The Financial Times. Despite this, the company was still run by the original family until 1972. Longman continues to exist as an imprint of Pearson (under the name Pearson Longman) but today, it’s mainly used by Pearson's ELT (English Language Teaching) business.

Feedback

“Stephen is highly creative and a strong visual thinker. You'd expect that from a designer; what you don't necessarily expect, but what you get with Stephen, is someone who's also extremely thoughtful, perceptive and able to see the perspective of other stakeholders in a project.

“With book jackets, there can be many stakeholders, and they often have different preferences, so his diplomacy and collaboration skills are invaluable.

“Great to work with.”
